I love this approach of assuming a host-like role and just mingling and getting people talking at networking events. I make a living selling insurance, so by nature, I'm a very outgoing person. For somebody like me, assuming the host-like role is easy, but for somebody who is shy and introverted, I think it can be a real challenge.
