"Sorry, I'm Just Not Ready For Your Call"

That was what the telemarketing girl just told me over the phone.  She had left a message at my business, and I returned her call.  That probably doesn't happen very often in the telemarketing biz, but it was happening to her now...and she wasn't ready.

She bungled answered.  She didn't have a script in front of her.  She couldn't overcome a few simple objections that I threw out to her.  In short, she wasn't ready to receive my potential sales lead.

Finally, she said to me, "Sorry, I'm just not ready for your call."

"Duh", I thought to myself.  "It's obvious!"

I don't know what the value of my call was, but she blew it.  Big time.  Her service actually interested me.  I was biting on the information that she e-mailed me.  And now, to my surprise, she was basically saying "not right now, thank you".

Sales lead generation is big business, and a lot of time and effort is devoted to finding prospects and marketing to them.  However, its been my experience that sales lead generation companies fall short - way short - when it comes time to hire qualified, talented sales people to land the deal.  That ends up costing a lot of money, and wasting a lot of potential business.

It still surprises me every time I hear a bungling novice on the other end of the line.  Come on, big sales lead generation companies!  Get with it!

There are a shortage of great salesmen from selling cars to selling insurance, most just aren't properly trained. Good article!

I can totally relate to your experience. I have lost count of the numbers of telemarketers who have phoned me, and quite obviously are reading a script. They are so wooden in their phone presentation, it is NAUSEATING! I often wonder how successful the campaigns are that these unenthusiastic people work on. I agree - the telemarketing companies MUST hire genuinely passionate and enthusiastic salespeople. If they don't, well, they may as well forget succeeding with the campaign at all! I know I don't buy from sales people who have a care factor of zero when it comes to what they are trying to sell me. In my industry (life insurance), I have seen fantastic salespeople achieve amazing results. You would probably think a life insurance product would be hard to get excited about, right? You can be forgiven for thinking that, but if a salesperson can be passionate about an insurance product, they can definitely get excited about other products and services too!
