"Conspiracy" might be a little strong, but it started with "c" and went well with "coincidence". So give me a little latitude there...
I got this comment today from a reader (annonymous, of course) who gave me a hard time for my post about the telemarketing calls I received from Countrywide Home Loans yesterday, the same day that they were dealing with news about their financial condition. Here is the comment:
"Ummm yeah.....great logic. We all know that when two things occur
simultaneously that one MUST be the cause of the other."
Ah, sarcasm. I love it.
I have no idea, nor do I have proof, that this was a coordinated effort on
Countrywide's part. But just as I cannot lay claim to the certainty that it was a result of the recent news, you cannot claim that this was not the case.
The reader's point is appreciated, but I was also e-mailed by another individual who read the blog and commented that she had received a call about refinancing yesterday as well. Coincidence?
By the way, there's nothing wrong with a business reacting to market conditions in an effort to drum-up sales. Nothing at all. My point in the blog post was that outside factors - like the day's troubling news for Countrywide Financial - might not be the best timing to launch a telemarketing campaign.
