O.K., O.K...for Thompson, "leads" were really votes.
But in dropping out of the Republican presidential primary today, Thompson demonstrates what happens when you don't get the incoming interest that you need to keep your campaign alive:
- You can't raise cash.
- You can't get people excited about investing their time and energy into the hard work of campaigning.
- You can't get the wins you need.
It's interesting to note that...
...Thompson was one of the "big names" in the race, due to his acting career (loved him in Die Hard 2). But that big name - and even his prior Senate career - meant exactly squat when it came to transfering that reputation to the world of presidential politics. The lesson for any business or sales professional that is looking for sales leads? You can't rely on your name to bring in business. It didn't work for Montgomery Ward, it didn't work for Pan Am Airlines, and it won't work for your business.
You have to get up early in the morning, plan for battle every day, and sell yourself and your service or product in a smart and compelling and original way so that you can stand out from the crowd.
Fred Thompson didn't get that done. And I think he has himself to blame for not seeing that his strategy lacked everything I just described

If it is true that Fred actually wanted to serve as president, then he really did screw things up. He is better on TV than any of his GOP opponents (virtual insurance for a good showing in our society... alas), and he's whip smart. Unfortunately, since he paid so little attention to his "leads," nobody heard much about what he stood for until it was too late. Perhaps we have not heard the last of Fred - I think that he and the dashing Mitt Romney would make a Made-For-Hollywood GOP ticket. I might not agree with their politics, but they would make a couple of fine-looking running mates!
